The Completed Shamrock Design

Shamrocks are considered a token of good luck, and are one of the popular symbols of Saint Patrick's Day, a celebration commemorating the life and works of the famous missionary and Patron Saint of Ireland. The term shamrock is derived from the Irish word seamrog which actually means little clover. The three leaves of the shamrock represent the Holy Trinity in Catholicism, and Saint Patrick used the leaves as an analogy when teaching the concept of the trinity.

Saint Patrick's Day has become a day of celebration for both Catholics and non-Catholics, and on this day, everyone's just a wee bit Irish.

Create your own good luck charm by working the free Shamrock embroidery pattern using a single color of variegated or overdyed embroidery thread stitched in basic surface embroidery stitches. The pattern can be enlarged or reduced to fit any size of square frame. Accent the finished hand embroidery design using glass seed beads.

Materials Needed for the Shamrock Pattern:
• piece of white or natural-colored 32-count evenweave fabric in linen or cotton, 10 inches larger than the desired finished size of the embroidered area (example: 8x8" finished size requires 18x18" piece of fabric)
• Size 10 Embroidery Needles
• Size 11/0 glass seed beads, green
• Embroidery Hoop
• Embroidery Scissors
Water-soluble fabric marking pen

You will also need a skein of your favorite shade of green embroidery floss*. For best results, use a variegated or overdyed floss that has several shades of green.

*I have used DMC Color Variations Embroidery Floss in color #4047, Princess Garden.
